Postdoctoral Scholar,
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Dr. Maya Stemmer is a data scientist and postdoctoral scholar whose work bridges machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and digital health. Her research focuses on leveraging mobile and social data to understand behavioral patterns, predict health states, and promote well-being. She holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where she also earned an M.Sc. in IEM, majoring in statistics, and a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Her doctoral research combined social media mining and NLP to identify patients with inflammatory bowel disease and analyze their online discourse.
Prior to joining the BRiTE Center, Dr. Stemmer was a postdoctoral researcher at the Data Science Institute of Reichman University, where she led and contributed to projects using cellphone usage data to assess and predict mental and physical health risks, including depressive symptoms, chronic pain, and suicidality. Her broader interests include digital phenotyping, social network analysis, and passive sensing, with a particular focus on behavioral health applications. She thrives in multidisciplinary environments where she can apply her analytical skills to advance medical care and well-being through scalable, data-driven solutions.
