Professional to Plain Language Neural Translation: A Path Toward Actionable Health Information

Health literacy is a key factor in making informed healthcare decisions, but professional language is often difficult for the general public to understand. This study will involve training deep learning models to translate between professional and plain language health information, and development of methods to improve upon the accuracy and readability of the resulting plain language summaries. Evaluation will consider how easy it is for readers to understand automatically-generated summaries, as compared with expert-authored ones.
